Introduction
You will probably be very surprised to learn that there are no fixed industry standards for testing the 'raw' speaker drivers. Yes, that's right. There is no standard temperature, humidity, test baffle, anechoic chamber and other factors. So, the numbers you see are pretty much the way most manufacturers want them to look. This is why speaker cabinet design programs don't work. Even if they were well designed, the numbers you put in the program are generalizations at best.
And the fact is, when we do prototype testing of hundreds of different models, the speaker that looks best on paper is almost never the one that sounds the best. The ear is the best testing device and--really--the only one that counts. But some customers want to see these numbers, so we list them below. Please note that we are probably the only company that doesn't spend weeks and weeks trying to make them look better. In fact, we pay almost no attention to them at all. We sell the prototype that sounds best, not the one that looks best on paper. Of course, the spec sheet is still valuable, but mostly for the dimensional drawing.
Please note that these are 'free air' specifications. When you put these DIY full range speakers in a cabinet, you can expect bass response much lower than the bass figure listed. How much, depends on the cabinet you use. The efficiency, when mounted in cabinets, will also be 3 to 4 dB higher, in most cabinets. All Audio Nirvana speakers can be considered super high efficiency. Average listening level is 1/10 of a watt--yes, that's not a misprint.
Speaker cabinets exist for one reason only--to produce bass. Mids and highs are the same in any cabinet or open baffle. Cabinets are best designed by using your experience, building many prototypes, and listening. And this is the way we do it. Also, please note that full range speakers, which have very short excursions (Xmax), require much different cabinet tuning than normal woofers do. Few speaker designers understand this.
