What Do We Sell?

We offer Audio Nirvana,  Lowther, and Fostex high efficiency DIY full range speakers and Audio Nirvana factory built vacuum tube stereo amplifiers in 300B Single Ended Triode, EL34 Single Ended, and EL84 Ultralinear.

Speakers are available in: 3" (76 mm), 4" (100 mm), 6.5" (165 mm), 8" (200 mm), 10" (250 mm), 12" (300 mm), and 15" (380 mm) sizes.  Audio Nirvana is the only company that has ever made true full range speakers larger than 8 inches.  We don't build larger full range speakers for more bass, but for astonishing midrange and treble.

Audio Nirvana high efficiency DIY full range speakers are available with three types of cones:  CLASSIC (Dust Cap), SUPER PLUS (Camel Hump/Phase Plug), and SUPER (Whizzer Cone/Phase plug).

The Audio Nirvana 'CLASSIC' series is an updated high efficiency full range speaker design from the 1950's and 60's.  It's a modern interpretation of the legendary Western Electric 755A and Altec 755A.  The 'CLASSIC' series is a high efficiency full range speaker that uses no whizzer cone or phase plug and yet still reaches 20,000 hz.  A special proprietary design makes this possible.

The Audio Nirvana 'SUPER PLUS' series, with camel hump/phase plug--but no whizzer cone--offers the most midrange detail.  It was inspired by a vintage RCA speaker called the LC1.

The Audio Nirvana 'SUPER' series offers traditional full range whizzer cone/phase plug models.  Any whizzer cone model is not truly a full range speaker, but a two-way speaker where the tweeter cone is glued to the woofer cone.  Almost all Lowther and Fostex models use whizzer cones. 'CLASSIC' and 'SUPER PLUS' models, without whizzer cones, will have higher quality sound (lower distortion and the sound comes from only one cone) but somewhat less horizontal dispersion than whizzer cone models.

Audio Nirvana high efficiency full range speakers are available with three types of magnets: FERRITE, NEODYMIUM, AND ALNICO.  Ferrite offers the best value. Neodymium rare earth magnets offer the highest efficiency and most detail.  Alnico magnet models are the smoothest, richest, best balanced, have the most bass, and offer more detail than Ferrite magnet models.

All Audio Nirvana DIY speakers use strong, beautiful, cast aluminum frames--not cheap pressed steel sheet metal as most companies use. We supply free DIY speaker cabinet plans, parts list, and setup tips with any purchase. You can also buy generic cabinets online, or have cabinets made by our woodworking partners.

Audio Nirvana high efficiency DIY full range speakers have better sound than any other speaker and better build quality than any other speaker.  But they are priced 40 to 85% LOWER than any similar design because they're built in our own factory.

We have been designing, building, and selling high efficiency DIY full range speakers--using full range drivers--for more than 25 years now. Before we started Audio Nirvana, we were one of the largest sellers of Lowther and Fostex full range speakers.  We continue to be dealers for both Lowther and Fostex.  With Audio Nirvana we are now one of the largest manufacturers of these types of speakers anywhere in the world.

15 years ago, after many years of using other company's products, we decided to build our own range of high efficiency DIY full range speakers--Audio Nirvana.  There were problems with all the other full range speaker designs available and we decided we could do better.  We have.  And, for the first time, it's possible for you to buy directly from a manufacturer. In this way, you get the most value for your money AND the best sound possible.

A lot of work goes into making a true high efficiency full range speaker, one that approaches 20,000 hz in the treble. And it's expensive. It is necessary to fit powerful magnets to obtain these high frequencies. Our Audio Nirvana full range speakers use magnets as strong--or stronger--than any other full range speaker.

Getting the midrange 'right' is especially difficult.  It takes extensive testing to optimize the many design elements.  In the end, Audio Nirvanas are the most detailed speakers that money can buy.

Getting the bass 'right' is also a difficult proposition. What should the cone excursion be? What type of material should be used for the cone, the surround, and the spider? What size of voice coil should be used? What type of wire? We have optimized all of these variables to bring you smooth, full, and very quick and precise bass response.

In addition to our traditional whizzer cone high efficiency full range speakers, new technology has allowed us to design--for the first time in history--true full range speakers WITHOUT a whizzer cone or phase plug.

Full range speakers--using whizzer cones--are really two-way speakers with the tweeter glued to the main cone, and using a mechanical crossover.  Our 'CLASSIC' series are really the first--and only--TRUE full range speakers, as the sound comes from a single cone--not two, as when a whizzer cone is used.   A whizzer cone is really a separate midrange/tweeter.  But whizzer cone full range speakers are still much better than multi-driver speakers with crossovers.

The phase plug, on a whizzer cone model, prevents cancellation ACROSS the front of the whizzer cone.   But it is impossible to prevent sound from the back of the whizzer cone from reflecting off the main cone.   This introduces distortion.  Our new 'CLASSIC' series high efficiency full range speakers eliminate this problem.

Similar in appearance, but with vastly superior performance, to the legendary Western Electric and Altec 755A, our 'CLASSIC' full range speakers exceed the 10,000 hz limits of that great speaker.

We have a policy at CommonSense Audio that we won't sell a more expensive speaker, unless it sounds better.  So, if you pay more, you will get better sound.

We offer a complete range of high efficiency DIY full range speakers from 3 inches to 15 inches.  No other company in the world, to our knowledge, makes true full range speakers larger than 8 inches.

And we offer three different types of magnets.

Our lower priced models use ferrite magnets.  This is the magnet that most speaker companies use.  They are powerful and inexpensive, so you get the best value for your money.

Our neodymium (neo-dim-ium) models use incredibly powerful, yet small, 'rare earth' magnets in a ring configuration.  These are our most detailed and most efficient DIY full range speakers.

Our alnico models use magnets made of aluminum, nickel, and cobalt.  They are the smoothest, richest, best balanced, and also make the most bass.  They are also more detailed than the ferrite magnet models.

Generally speaking, a well designed larger cabinet is always better than a well designed smaller one.  Similarly, a well designed larger full range driver is usually better than a well designed smaller one.  Why?  We can't say for sure, but our guess is that the larger cone can more accurately reproduce vocals and most musical instruments.  They are closer in size to the instruments (and human diaphragm) they are trying to reproduce.  There is a fullness and richness to larger high efficiency full range speakers that most smaller ones just can't achieve.

In the past, the main reason to use a smaller full range speaker was because a larger one wouldn't go high enough in the treble.  However, all Audio Nirvana high efficiency full range speakers have extension beyond the limits of human hearing .  So, unless a cabinet choice requires a smaller speaker, we recommend purchasing the largest Audio Nirvana high efficiency full range speaker that fits your preferred DIY cabinet.

The 'CLASSIC' series does not require a whizzer cone, or phase plug, and provides more detail, more clarity, more coherence, and less distortion.  The voice coil is sealed and protected by a specially treated fabric dust cap.

Our 'SUPER PLUS' models use special 'camel humps', on the cone, to redirect midrange and treble detail that is normally lost up to the ceiling and down to the floor.   These are our most detailed high efficiency full range speakers (in each size group).

Our 'SUPER' models include a cast aluminum phase plug (copper anodized) to prevent cancellation across the front of  the main cone.  In the larger sizes (10, 12, and 15 inches) they also offer the widest horizontal dispersion--only important if you often listen from several places in the room, listen with other people, or use them mostly for home theater.

All Audio Nirvana high efficiency DIY full range speakers use the highest quality cast aluminum frames, not cheap pressed steel sheet metal, as most companies use.

99.99% of all speaker cabinets ever made are 'bass reflex' designs.   We feel that PROPERLY DESIGNED bass reflex DIY speaker cabinets give the best possible sound.

However, Audio Nirvana high efficiency DIY full range speakers can work well in bass horn, transmission line, open baffle, and infinite baffle cabinet designs.   These require 'short excursion' drivers (speakers) and that's what all Audio Nirvana full range speakers are.

For those requiring a smaller system, we have three different 'bookshelf' size bass reflex DIY speaker cabinet designs available:

The Micromonitor (.41 cubic feet or 12 liters) was designed primarily as a surround DIY speaker for home theater.  It still makes a nice 'extension' speaker for small rooms.  It is also an excellent computer speaker.  You can supplement it with a subwoofer for more bass output.  Many people also choose it as a center channel speaker.

The Minimonitor (.87 cubic feet or 25 liters) is really our smallest stand alone system.  It has full bass and dynamics and a satisfying overall balance.  It also makes a wonderful center channel or surround speaker.

The Monitor (1.5 cubic feet or 43 liters) is our largest bookshelf system.  It gives the bass output of many floor standing systems in a smaller package.  As with all the bookshelf systems, they can be placed upright or on their side.  This DIY speaker cabinet will accept every speaker size up to, and including, 12 inches.  There is also a Monitor MkII version which has a thin front baffle, but is deeper.  The difference is mainly in the styling.  Both of these can be used on the floor, as the dispersion of all Audio Nirvana high efficiency DIY full range speakers is wide enough that stands are not required.

For those who want a floor standing system, we have the following bass reflex systems available:

The 1.3 (1.3 cubic feet or 37 liters) is our smallest floor standing system. It makes satisfactory bass for those who have space limitations.

The 2.8 (2.8 cubic feet or 80 liters) comes in two versions. The Series I has a wide front baffle, but is shallow in depth. The MkII has a thin front baffle, but is deeper. The difference is mainly in the styling. Both versions are available with two different porting arrangements. The "Big Port" version offers more mid bass at the expense of some low bass output. The "Twin Port" version has 1/3 octave more bass extension, at the expense of some mid bass output. We generally recommend the "Big Port" version for ferrite and neodymium magnet DIY speakers and the "Twin Port" version for alnico magnet DIY speakers.

We also offer two different dual driver designs: the 2.8 Dynamic and the 2.8 Ambience. The Dynamic gives a big, powerful sound while maintaining the same overall tonal balance as the normal 2.8. The Ambience puts a lot more 'weight' in the bass and adds a sense of 'air' to the music. It's our favorite version of the 2.8 if you use 8 inch speakers.

The 5.6 or 5.6 MkII (5.6 cubic feet or 160 liters) offer more bass and dynamics, in a DIY speaker cabinet that is not too large for most rooms.   The 5.6 MkII is narrower and deeper, but will not accept the 15 inch speaker.

The 8.0 Stealth (8.0 cubic feet or 227 liters) is for those of you for whom WAF (wife acceptance factor) is important.  It looks like the smaller 5.6 from the front, but is 5.75 inches deeper (146 mm).  It has more bass and dynamics than the 5.6, but doesn't really look that large.

The 13.6 (13.6 cubic feet or 385 liters) is a huge cabinet that works best with the larger Audio Nirvana full range speaker models. It can even hold two 15 inch full range speakers.  It's the ultimate!

And for those of you looking for something 'different', we offer an open baffle speaker type of cabinet:

The Open Baffle speaker is basically just a piece of wood supported by two 'wings' to hold it upright. Open baffle speakers don't generate a lot of bass and usually roll off below 63 hz. However, the sound from the back of the open baffle speaker is free to reflect off rear walls and join the sound from the front of the speaker. Open baffle speakers give a 'fat' sound that is very nice for classical music or for people favoring this type of sound. Supplemented with a quality subwoofer, open baffle speakers give an unusual presentation.  Open baffle speakers work best with the largest high efficiency full range speakers which can generate more bass without the help of a cabinet.  Open baffle speakers are also a way to enjoy our best 15 inch speakers, without requiring a large cabinet.  We are experts on open baffle speaker designs and have many years experience.   If you go to www.openbaffle.com you will come to this site.

Our usual advice is to pick the largest DIY speaker cabinet that fits your room and then use the largest full range speaker that will fit in that cabinet.

If you can afford to purchase the neodymium or alnico models, they will give better sound.

If the choice is between a larger ferrite model, or smaller neodymium or alnico model, we would recommend buying the smaller, premium magnet model.

Finally, someone has made a Class A Single Ended Triode vacuum tube stereo amplifier with deep, powerful, extended bass and highs that extend to the limits of human hearing.  Together with the traditional smooth and detailed SET midrange, this is the best sounding amplifier we have heard to date.  The Audio Nirvana 300B SET uses an enormously powerful toroidal power supply, protected in a real potted case (not a dummy one, as many companies use).  Transformers are massive and are hand wound in our own factory.  The amplifier weighs approximately 56 lbs (25 kg).  4 ohm and 8 ohm terminals. Three inputs with selector.  Dual voltage:  115 volts or 230 volts. Single Ended, Class A amplifiers are usually very expensive.   And they still have small transformers and are not well designed.   A great Single Ended design requires special transformers and the experience to make them properly.   Unlike almost every other amplifier company out there, we wind our own transformers to exacting specifications.   We have used our experience with Single Ended to develop the best circuit, and we use one of the most popular power tubes of all time--the EL34.  Our Audio Nirvana EL34 SE has deep, powerful bass and extended highs.  Together with the traditional smooth and detailed Single Ended midrange, this is a great sounding amplifier.  The amplifier weighs approximately 33 lbs (15 kg).  Includes two sets of knobs--silver and black.  4 ohm and 8 ohm terminals.  Two inputs with selector.  Dual voltage:  115 volts or 230 volts.  Parts are chosen for the best possible sound quality--not because we want to impress you with 'boutique' names.  To maintain the superb sound, there are no adjustments to be made--ever.   Self biasing, no AC or DC balance to adjust.
